At the beginning of the democratic transition in Paraguay, the foundations of the modern political system were laid. They established a barrier to the emergence of a new dictatorship, but were unable to destroy the established informal socio-political and economic ties that preserved the oligarchic power and dominance of the right-wing Colorado party. The absence of an influential force for the formation of an active center-left political segment significantly narrows the range of the political spectrum of parties. After thirty years of democratic development, Paraguay has achieved a stable state of electoral democracy.
